Yogi of the Month: Debra Edwards
I started practicing in January of 2007. The first day, I wore a J.Lo velour jumpsuit (those that practice will understand the impact of this wardrobe choice)! I didn’t think I would make it through the class! I felt like the least flexible person in the room, and the heat (oh, the heat)!
I thought everyone was staring at me, when of course no one was, since they were all preoccupied with getting through the class themselves. But even after my initial experience of what Bikram himself calls “Bikram’s Torture Chamber,” I was hooked. It was something about the way I felt after my first class – sore yet renewed, tired yet energized – I felt like a conqueror! So I stuck with it and now it has become an instrumental part of my life helping me maintain a strong mind, body and soul balance.
Over the years my endurance has strengthened beyond what I thought possible. There are postures I could not do at all in the beginning (and never thought I would be able to) that I can do now. My biggest challenge has been listening to the instructors through my perfected ability to ignore what I don’t want to hear or do (yep, there are life lessons to be gained as well…).
I am always encouraging folks to give it a try because it has impacted and transformed my life in such a positive way. Plus, as an added bonus, the instructors have a wealth of inspirational and practical sayings that are yummy for the soul! My favorite one for newbies (but as well for experienced yogis) is to “leave your ego at the door – it is the one thing you will NOT need.” Namaste

Coming March 1: BYB Partners with “Perkville” Points for Doing More Yoga, Referrals and Sharing
Starting March 1st, 2013 BYB will partner with Perkville to reward our loyal customers. It’s sort of like a frequent flyer program for our members, earning points by attending class, referring friends, following us on Twitter and more.
Perkville integrates directly with MINDBODY so when you attend classes you automatically earn points, and Perkville sends an email the next morning inviting you to track your points online at www.perkville.com. Members that have enough points for rewards (e.g. free classes, t-shirts, yoga wear/gear discounts, and more) can redeem points on Perkville and bring in a printed voucher that you will use as payment.
Perkville is a trusted partner of MINDBODY, our scheduling, billing and check-in system. Perkville will never share or use any Bikram Yoga Bethesda client information.
